Reason why I love my job #172:
As our crew has been deconstructing the WWII era barracks up at Fort Lewis, we discovered quite a bit of the framing material to be Vertical Grain Douglas Fir! We've culled through stacks of 2x6 and 2x8 boards to separate the VG from the face grain material (we thought it would be criminal to just sell it as framing lumber only to again be buried beneath sheet rock and paint!). While we're selling it for a bit more than our standard linear foot rate, woodworkers will still appreciate our reasonably priced board foot rate.
Vertical grain doug fir: $2-3 per board foot, depending on quality/tightness of the grain.
